I started out in the helping profession after receiving my Bachelor of Social Work Degree from Ferrum College. With that education and degree, I began working with juvenile delinquents who had experienced abuse, neglect, and abandonment issues most of their life. Then I moved on from that group to working with the geriatric population in nursing homes which transitioned into physical rehabilitation that included extensive social services and discharge planning for the clients. I was destined to get into the mental health counseling field when by fate, I was recruited to work with at risk children, adolescents, and their families to prevent out of home placements. This was a great learning experience but I soon realized I needed to have more education and training to do the job well. I am now a Licensed Professional Counselor who was trained at Radford University in Counselor Education. I use the professional clinical experiences and the many life experiences to support my clients to achieve their mental health goals. Open-minded, genuine, and unconditional positive regard are part of my personality as well as my style of counseling. I have experience working with individuals who present with Depression, Anxiety, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, and Schizophrenia. I use many approaches to providing psychotherapy that includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Brief Therapy, and Mindfulness. My interests are in helping my clients to achieve improved self esteem that includes the confidence to be able to make decisions about their life to have meaning, and to reinforce their self-worth and expectations.
